Safety Tips for the Month of January

January is a great time to focus on safety at home and in the workplace. According to Safety Services Company, some of the key safety topics for January include:

  1. Winter weather safety: With the cold weather, it’s important to take precautions to avoid slips, trips, and falls. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing, and be aware of any icy or slippery surfaces.
  2. Indoor air quality: During the winter months, indoor air quality can be a concern. Make sure your workplace is properly ventilated and consider using air purifiers or other devices to improve air quality.
  3. Emergency preparedness: Winter weather can also bring power outages and other emergencies. Make sure your workplace has an emergency plan in place and that all employees are aware of what to do in case of an emergency.
  4. Fire safety: With heaters and other heating devices in use during the winter months, it’s important to be aware of fire hazards. Make sure all heating devices are properly maintained and that family members and employees know how to use them safely.

National Heart Month

  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing 375,476 people in 2021.
  • About 1 in 20 adults aged 20 and older have CAD (or about 5%).
  • In 2021, about 2 in 10 deaths from CAD happen in adults less than 65 years old.

Poison Prevention Week

National Poison Prevention Week raises awareness of poison prevention nationwide during the third full week of March every year. The week is an opportunity to highlight the dangers of poisonings for people of all ages as well as for pets and promote community involvement in poisoning prevention.

But what is a “poison,” exactly? The simplest answer is just about anything can be poisonous when used in the wrong way, in the wrong amount, or by the wrong person. That’s why poisoning prevention educators like me don’t spend a lot of time telling people what products and substances they should keep out of their homes. I mean, you probably don’t need to know that arsenic or cyanide lying around is dangerous but what about laundry products? Over-the-counter medicines? Lotions and creams? Bug spray? Essential oils? These products, among many others typically found in homes, can be poisonous under the right (or should I say “wrong”!) circumstances.

In 2021, across all ages, there were 627 poison exposures reported per 100,000 population. The highest incidence occurred in one- and two-year-olds, with 6,439 and 5,997 exposures/100,000 children in the respective age groups. For teens, 640 exposures per 100,000 population were reported.

Deaths from preventable poisoning numbered 87,404 in 2020, the most current data year. The death rate per 100,000 population was 26.5. Males are at greatest risk, with a death rate of 38.3 compared to 15.1 for females. Total poisoning deaths increased 32%, from 65,773 in 2019, and well over seven times the 1999 total.

Drug poisonings account for 95% of poisoning deaths, more frequently referred to as drug overdoses. Over three out of four of these drug overdose deaths involved opioids.

Deaths due to alcohol poisoning increased 16% in 2020, totaling 2,665. Alcohol poisoning deaths for males outnumbered those for females by three to one. It should be noted that alcohol may also be present in combination with other drugs.

Kids & Pets in HOT Vehicles

Here are a few tips for keeping kids, pets, and yourself safe this summer: Never leave a child or your pet unattended in a car, even for less than a minute and even if the windows are tinted or down. The same recommendation applies to pets and the elderly. Make sure all children leave the vehicle when you reach your destination.

May is Water Safety & Drowning Prevention Month

The National Water Safety Coalition, led by American Red Cross, National Recreation and Park Association, Pool & Hot Tub Alliance and World Waterpark Association, is celebrating its 19th annual National Water Safety Month (NWSM) this May. With support from water safety organizations across the country, the Coalition raises awareness about water safety and highlights the importance of public education regarding safer practices for kids and adults in and around water.

“Most child drownings occur during times without parent or guardian permission to be in the water or direct supervision,” said William D. Ramos, PhD, member of the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council. “National Water Safety Month is a powerful way to raise awareness of this fact at the start of the warm weather season. During this month and throughout the year, we are encouraging parents and caregivers to apply layers of protection – starting with preventing unsupervised access to water such as fencing pools and spas with adequate barriers. Other critical layers include providing constant attention to children in or near water, and always keeping an eye out for any water dangers such as portable splash pools, buckets and bathtubs, or any place where water may collect.”

National Safety Month

Each June, we celebrate National Safety Month. Safety matters every day of the year, but during June it gets the extra attention it deserves so we can all stay safe from the workplace to anyplace. As part of the celebration of safety, the National Safety Council (NSC) selects themes for each week of the month.

  • Week 1: Emergency Preparedness
  • Week 2: Slips, Trips and Falls
  • Week 3: Heat-Related Illness
  • Week 4: Hazard Recognition
